Partnership with Flotilla

Hatmill has partnered with Flotilla to support its journey towards net zero. Flotilla’s expertise in carbon measurement and sustainability planning plays a crucial role in quantifying Hatmill’s emissions and setting clear, achievable goals.

“Working with Flotilla as a carbon accounting specialist with cutting-edge technology adds credibility and gives us the confidence to lead the industry towards a greener future.”  Aaron Thomas, Consultant at Hatmill

The challenge

Recognising the urgent need to address its environmental impact, Hatmill has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2039. This commitment is driven by growing client demand for sustainable supply chain solutions and the company’s dedication to setting a new standard in the logistics and supply chain industry.

Key initiatives and outcomes

1. Carbon footprint assessment:

Flotilla’s initial carbon footprint assessment helped Hatmill understand its emissions profile. With no direct Scope 1 or Scope 2 emissions due to the absence of physical offices and an all-electric company car fleet, the focus was on Scope 3 emissions, which amounted to 338 tCO2e in 2023, primarily from business travel and accommodation.

2. Sustainable travel and procurement:

Hatmill is implementing sustainable travel practices, such as using public transport for team events and encouraging virtual meetings. They are also enhancing data capture methods for better insight into travel-related emissions. • The company is actively engaging with suppliers to integrate sustainable practices into their operations, promoting a supply chain that prioritizes environmental responsibility.

3. Employee engagement and education:

An employee survey, led by Flotilla, revealed the need for better internal communication regarding environmental actions. As a result, Hatmill has ramped up its efforts to educate and engage employees on sustainability.

Initiatives include promoting energy reduction while working from home, creating a sustainable home working guide and forming an employee-led green team.

4. Net zero action plan:

Hatmill’s net zero action plan involves setting a baseline year, targeting meaningful carbon offsetting projects, and prioritising actions that deliver significant carbon savings. This includes increasing the number of electric vehicles through an employee electric car scheme and operating without physical office spaces.

5. External recognition and future goals:

Hatmill is pursuing approval of its net-zero targets through the Science Based Targets initiative, demonstrating its commitment to aligning with global climate goals.

The company plans to leverage its sustainability achievements to attract talent, particularly from younger generations who prioritize environmental impact in their career choices.

Conclusion

Hatmill’s collaboration with Flotilla exemplifies a strategic approach to achieving net zero emissions. By integrating sustainability into every aspect of its operations and leading by example in the logistics and supply chain industry, Hatmill is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also inspiring other businesses to follow suit.
